Artificial Intelligence

Also known as: AI

In plain English

AI is software that can do things we usually think need a human brain, like understanding a question, recognising a face in a photo or recommending a movie. It doesn't think like a person; it learns patterns from lots of examples.

In practice

In business, "AI" is an umbrella term covering everything from fraud-detection models to chatbots. When a vendor says a product "uses AI", ask which kind: a predictive model, a generative model, or simple automation rules dressed up as AI.

Under the hood

AI is the broad field of building systems that perceive, reason, learn and act. Modern AI is dominated by machine learning, especially deep neural networks, but the field also includes symbolic approaches such as rule-based systems, search and planning.

Example

"We're adding AI to the service desk to route tickets automatically."
